Partial birth abortion: D & X

For those who care this subject is very painful reading. It is easy to forget what the battle for human rights and justice is about – to speak about the killing of ‘x number‘ of unborn babies without really thinking what it means.

The ‘D & X’ abortion procedure is regarded as the most efficient method of killing babies over five months of development by some abortionists, including David Grundemann who operates in Queensland and New South Wales, and is in the process of opening an abortion clinic in Melbourne.

We have a reprint of the paper delivered to the National Abortion Federation Risk Management Seminar in Dallas, Texas by Martin Haskell, MD, the originator of this barbaric operation. There are also drawings depicting the operation in a simple manner. However we did not want to include them here for the sake of sensitivity; they are available by request from Pro-Life SA. This information sheet is an abridged version of his paper which, although still upsetting to read, should not overly offend in the context of what we are discussing - abortion - the whole subject an upsetting and emotional issue.

The detached, chilling manner of writing indicates how little this person is affected by killing children in the manner he is describing. His hands, which encircle the baby’s body and hold it during its delivery and killing, are the only human touch these children will ever feel - not a tender caress but manipulating it into the best position to be killed.

  • After dilating the cervix over a 48 hour period, the abortionist begins the abortion.

  • Guided by ultrasound the abortionist grabs one of the baby’s legs with forceps. The baby’s leg is pulled out into the birth canal. If the baby is lying face up he uses pressure on this leg to flip the child so that it is now facing downwards.

  • The abortionist delivers the baby’s other leg, then its torso, shoulders and arms, leaving only the head in the uterus. He then feels along the baby’s spine till he locates the base of the skull or the soft spot on the baby’s head, and using the tip of a curved pair of scissors in the other hand he forces the scissors into the skull. He then spreads the scissors to enlarge the hole and inserts a suction catheter into the hole and sucks out the baby’s brains.

  • He crushes the empty skull and delivers the now-dead child, which is disposed of; the mother, who has been awake through the whole procedure, is cleaned up and allowed to go home…

A registered nurse tells this story

Her nursing agency assigned her to an abortion clinic. Since she considered herself very ‘pro-choice’ she didn’t think this assignment would be a problem. She was wrong.

"I stood at the doctor’s side and watched him perform a partial-birth abortion on a woman who was six months pregnant. The baby’s heartbeat was clearly visible on the ultrasound screen. The doctor delivered the baby’s body and arms, everything but his little head. The baby’s body was moving. His little fingers were clasping together. He was kicking his feet. The doctor took a pair of scissors and inserted them into the back of the baby’s head, and the baby’s arms jerked out in a flinch, a startle reaction, like a baby does when he thinks that he might fall. Then the doctor opened the scissors up. Then he stuck the high-powered suction tube into the hole and sucked the baby’s brains out. Now the baby was completely limp.

I never went back to the clinic. But I am still haunted by the face of that little boy. It was the most perfect, angelic face I have ever seen."
